Sulgher Fantastici 1755 – 1824 · Florence, Italy Admitted to the prestigious Accademia dell’Arcadia in 1770 under the pseudonym Temira Parraside, Sulgher Fantastici was celebrated as an improviser-poet of exceptional merit at the Royal Florentine Academy of Fine Letters. She is one of the earliest female poets to address Dante directly through necromantic poetry, reclaiming Tuscan verse at a moment when Florence’s poetic voices had largely fallen silent. Hamilton Ramsay 1825 – 1902 · Britain Claudia Hamilton Ramsay was the first woman to publish a complete verse translation of Dante’s Divina Commedia into English, in 1862–63. Belonging to a family of distinguished and talented women, she spent many years in Italy, where she formed lasting relationships with expatriates and travellers, among them the writer Vernon Lee.
